Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs at complete rest — for breathing, circulation and keeping your organs running. It is the foundation of your daily calorie needs.

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, the formula most dietitians rely on today. To find the calories you actually need in a day, multiply your BMR by an activity factor — the Calorie Calculator does this for you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between BMR and daily calories?

BMR is what you burn at rest. Your total daily need (TDEE) is your BMR multiplied by an activity factor — someone very active needs far more than their BMR. Use the Calorie Calculator to include activity.

Why does BMR fall as you age?

Muscle mass tends to decline and metabolism slows with age, so BMR drops. Strength training and enough protein help preserve muscle and keep your metabolism higher.

Should I eat below my BMR to lose weight?

Generally no. Eating below your BMR for long periods can be unsafe and hard to sustain. A mild deficit from your total daily needs — not below BMR — is the healthier route.
