Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick way to check whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height. It is calculated as your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres.

This calculator uses the Asian-Indian BMI ranges recommended by the WHO — a BMI of 23 or above is considered overweight, and 25 or above is obese. These are lower than the international cut-offs because Indians tend to carry more body fat and face higher risk of diabetes and heart disease at the same BMI.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy BMI for Indians?

For Indian and other South Asian adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 22.9 is considered healthy. 23–24.9 is overweight and 25 or above is obese — lower than the general international cut-offs.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

BMI is a useful general screen but it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat. Very muscular people may show a high BMI while being healthy, and it isn't meant for children or pregnant women. Use it alongside waist size and how you feel.

How can I reach a healthy weight?

Sustainable changes work best: a mild calorie deficit, enough protein and vegetables, fixed portions of rice or roti, and regular movement. You can generate a free personalised Indian diet plan on TheVedaFuel.
