The right way to eat rice for diabetes (glycemic tips)

By Poonam Sharma · Dietician · Yoga Instructor · Naturopathy Practitioner

🍚

Rice is a staple across India, and the good news is that people with diabetes can still enjoy it with a few smart tweaks.

Choose the right variety: hand-pounded, brown, or parboiled rice have a lower glycemic load than polished white rice.

Pair rice with protein and fibre — dal, sabzi and a bowl of curd slow down glucose absorption.

Cool and reheat: cooking rice, cooling it, then reheating increases resistant starch, which is gentler on blood sugar.

Eat your vegetables and protein first, rice last. This simple sequencing can meaningfully blunt the post-meal sugar spike.

A short 10-minute walk after lunch helps your muscles absorb glucose without extra insulin.

Portion matters most. A katori of rice with plenty of vegetables is very different from a heaped plate.

Frequently asked questions

Is brown rice always better than white rice for diabetes?

Brown rice has more fibre and a lower glycemic load, so it is generally the better default — but portion size and what you eat alongside it matter more than the colour of the rice.

How much rice can a diabetic eat in a day?

This is individual and depends on your medication, activity and overall carbohydrate budget. Many people do well with one to two small katoris per day. Confirm your target with your doctor or dietician.
