Why belly fat is stubborn — and what actually works
By Poonam Sharma · Dietician · Yoga Instructor · Naturopathy Practitioner
No amount of crunches will burn the fat sitting on top of your abdominal muscles. Spot reduction simply is not how the body releases fat.
Belly fat, particularly the deeper visceral kind, is strongly linked to insulin resistance, chronic stress and poor sleep.
Sleep is the most underrated lever. Fewer than six hours a night raises cortisol and hunger hormones, which pushes storage toward the midsection.
Strength training two to three times a week preserves muscle while you lose weight, which keeps your metabolic rate from falling.
Cut liquid sugar first — sweetened tea, cold drinks and packaged juices contribute calories without any fullness.
Manage stress deliberately. Ten minutes of pranayama or a daily walk lowers cortisol more reliably than any supplement.
Be patient with the order of loss. The abdomen is often the last area to change, even when the scale has been moving for weeks.
